Soundbite XL

113863271216847

Got a couple of spare minutes, so I thought I'd let you all know about the Soundbite XL from Red Sound. The Australian distributor for it came through here a few weeks ago to show us. To be honest, our initial reaction was that it seemed a little expensive for what is essentially a loop capturing device. We had a bit of a play with it, couldn't really see anything special about it and had pretty much decided that we wouldn't stock it.

When Adam (the distributor) came back, however, he gave us a lengthy demo (he's been using one in his own DJ sets for a while), and I have to say we were gobsmacked. This is hands-down the most accurate and easy way to capture and replay loops that we've seen. Once we'd seen what it can do, we signed up to stock them straight away.

To give you an indication of just how good it is, Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin and Pete Tong are all using it extensively. We have it on good authority that Carl Cox has it in his contract for every gig that one is supplied for him to use.

The Soundbite XL has 6 'cells' or 'slots' in which you can store your captured loops of varying lengths. In the default mode the loops are captured in 1, 2, 4, 4, 8 and 16 beats. You can also change it to capture loops in 1/4, 1/2, 1, 4, 8 and 16 beats, and lastly 1/4, 1/2, 1, 4, 4 & 32 beats.

It can be connected to your mixer in a variety of ways. The usual way of course is to use a Send/Return channel, as with any other outboard module. If the mixer you're playing on doesn't have a Send/Return however, you can instead take the output from the headphone jack and then connect the output of the Soundbite to a spare channel on your mixer. This is pretty handy if you're playing at a gig somewhere and their mixer either doesn't have Send/Return or you don't have access to it for some reason (e.g. may already be used by an inhouse effects unit). Also makes it much easier and quicker to setup.

Once you're connected and you power it up, the Soundbite immediately picks up the BPM of the audio coming into it. The BPM is displayed in the LED screen, and each of the 6 buttons' LEDs also flash in time with the music.

Capturing a loop is as simple as pressing one of the buttons. You don't have to be absolutely accurate as it'll capture on the downbeat even if you press a tad before or even after the beat falls. After it's finished capturing, it'll begin playing back immediately in time. You may want this to happen, but we've found that the best way is to have the volume of the channel that the Soundbite is playing back into turned down whilst you load it up with all of the samples you need.

Once you have them recorded and you've stopped them all from playing, you can start firing off loops at your whim, either dropping them in over the top of the main track or cutting into them by using the crossfader. This second way is really the most fun, as you can essentially remix the track on the fly, and the loops stay perfectly in time the whole time. And when I say perfectly, I mean PERFECTLY. Even after playing the main track for a couple of minutes and then cutting back into a loop we found that it was still keeping it in time. You don't even have to adjust the beginning or end of the loop the way you do with CDJs, it just works!

This is really the most accurate BPM engine that we've seen. Nothing else we've used has ever been so easy or so much fun. Every time we walk past our demo model on the counter we can't resist having a quick play with it. With all of the hard work taken out of making sure the loops stay in time, it frees you up to wreck havoc with your mix. Very, very cool.

And as if that wasn't enough, it also has a very respectable filter effect built into it. You can either run the loops through the filter, or you can just use it as an effects unit and run the main mix through it.

It does seem like $519 is a lot to drop on a bit of gear that really only does one thing (excluding the filter for a moment), but it just does it so well and allows you to be so creative so easily. If you're interested in trying it out, drop in sometime and we'll give you a demo.

The new Vestax VCI-100 has arrived

Lg_vci100

Highly anticipated, the Vestax VCI-100 has upped the ante for MIDI controllers with their first venture into the digital DJ market. The VCI-100 is a really solidly built unit, with an all-metal chassis and the high level of build quality that we've come to expect from Vestax, and we think that this is what will set it apart from the field. It does have a higher price tag than most MIDI controllers out there, but for your hard earned dollars you get a highly durable, well built, professional level unit. For a lot of pro level DJs out there, this is exactly what they've been waiting for.

The VCI-100 comes bundled with Native Instruments' Traktor 3 LE, and comes preconfigured to control Traktor's main functionality - track previewing/loading, crossfading, volume fading, 4 band EQ, effects etc can all be controlled out of the box. This is pretty cool, it means you can start mixing straight away once you've connected it up to your laptop and audio interface. Note that it's not limited to Traktor - it can control any software capable of MIDI-learn, and Vestax have templates for other software on their website available to download.

I'll be setting one of these up tomorrow to take it through it's paces, so once I've had a good play with it I'll post up some more info.

But that's not all.

We have a lot of free stuff from our kind suppliers to give away at the end of the sale so everyone who RSVP'd to the party and anyone who buys something during the week will go into the draw to win some great prizes. A massive thanks to these suppliers for donating all the goodies - Modular, Stomp, Inertia, Musiclink, Jands, Acoustic Technologies, Creative Vibes, Electric Factory, Fuzzy, InTheMix, 3d, Ministry Of Sound & Hussle Recordings, Vinyl Factory, Peepshow & Playground and Sweetchilli.

Happy hunting.

Thanks for a smashing birthday

Well, we turned five and threw a party and hoped everyone who came along on the night had just as much fun as we did. A big thanks to Home, Famous (Brett and the boys) and all of you who came along to help celebrate the milestone.

There were 2500 people throughout the club that night and they were all there for us...well not really, but we had fun on the Terrace with our crew anyway.

Thanks again everyone and we'll see you at our 10th birthday celebrations.

Traktor Scratch in stock now

Traktorscratch_componentsIf any of you were confused before about what direction to take regarding digital DJ'ing, Native Instruments have made the choice a tad more difficult with the release of Traktor Scratch.

After the much publicised split between NI and Stanton, everyone has been waiting to see what the clever people at NI could come up with as they go it alone. For those of you familiar with NI's products I think we can safely assume that it was always going to be a quality product. With some of the best software in the music production market (Massive, Battery, Absynth, Reaktor etc) and some really nicely designed hardware (Kore), they have a great pedigree behind them and much to live up to.

Having just received stock a few days ago, we haven't had a chance to really hammer it yet (we have so many different things going on here at the moment, it's just crazy!). It is setup on a demo computer so its ready to try out for those interested. I will say that the hardware itself is really lovely. Beautifully designed with plenty of connectivity (8 ins, 8 outs, MIDI, USB 2.0...), it's certainly raised the bar for the rest of the field. Once we get past this weekend with all of our 5th birthday party arrangements at an end, we hope to give it a thorough going over. We'll have our own thoughts on it up here on the blog pretty soon.

You can buy Traktor Scratch from us here.

We're all set! One week to go before we celebrate 5 years of Spank down at Home nightclub. We'll be up on the Terrace, which is on the top floor for anyone who hasn't been before. We're still working out final set times, but Mark, Luke (aka Custard Jim) and myself are all playing along with regulars Trix, Dux Nuts and Tim Sea.

We're REALLY looking forward to a big night with all of our regular customers. It'll be a great chance for us to hang out with you all and buy you a drink. If you can make it, we'd love to see you there.

We've organised a couple of things for you with the help of the guys running the night (big thanks to Brett, Mark & Jordan). If you RSVP to shop@spankrecords.com.au with your full name, it'll entitle you to the following:

  • Discounted entry of $20 instead of $25
  • We'll have our own dedicated guestlist queue for you to enter through
  • You'll go into the draw for various giveaways that we'll announce the week after

We'll also be carrying a bunch of free drink vouchers with us, so come & hit us up for a couple so we can help offset the cost of entry a bit for you. We'll be giving them out for as long as they last.

We really hope you can make it, it's gonna be a fun night.

M-Audio Torq Video Tutorials

M-Audio have released a whole bunch of video tutorials for Torq. I've only had a chance to watch one of them so far, but they look really good and quite extensive. The one I watched is hosted by Chad Carrier, who's the product manager for M-Audio's new Synchroscience department.

You can find the videos here.

Digital Downloads available soon!

This is quite possibly our biggest announcement for quite some time. Over the past 12 months we have been working hard to introduce digital downloads to our website, and we are very proud to announce that we are now only a few short weeks away from launching.

This new section to the site will allow you to preview, buy & immediately download 320kbps MP3 tracks. You can then either burn these to cd to play or they can also be used in various digital DJ software programs such as Serato, Torq, Traktor Scratch, Ableton etc. For those of you who aren't DJs but want the latest dance tracks to listen to, they can also be put on your iPods or other MP3 players.

The move to bring digital to our store was an obvious one. Over the last couple of years technology has advanced in ways that no one could have imagined, and we're seeing more & more people embrace digital either as a part of or a total replacement of their vinyl collection. Although we began as a vinyl only store, over the last few years we've continued to expand our product range to encompass a wide range of DJ products, including equipment and software for digital DJs, and we see digital content as just another part of that expansion.

Our initial range of digital catalogue will be fairly limited whilst we ensure that all the new parts of the website are working the way they should. We will slowly introduce new catalogue over the next 3 months, after which we'll load up the site with as much content as we can get our hands on. A lot of this will come from overseas, but we're also going to have a real focus on Australian produced content. We feel that there's a ton of stuff made right here that hasn't had an opportunity to see the light of day, so we'll be looking to play a big part in helping that situation.

As we get closer we'll release more details as to the final launch date. In the meantime, any record labels who'd be interested in selling their tracks through us can contact us for further details (ph (02) 9360 0548 or email digital@spankrecords.com.au).
