Digital DJ Controllers - Better the second time around?

If there's one clear message that's come out of the NAMM show this year, it's that the age of the digital DJ controller is well and truly here. Not that it wasn't here last year, but this year it seems as though there is less scrambling to get a product out into the marketplace just to be there, and more real, considered thought about what that product should actually be.

Visits to all of my favourite industry-related blogs & websites over the past weeks since Namm finished up have more than demonstrated this to me. Most of the DJ related talk has been about the new digital controllers from Vestax (the VCI300 & VCM600):

Numark (the NS7):

and even Stanton have re-entered the race with the SC System:

Also of note is the new partnership arrangements between Serato & both Numark & Vestax, whose controllers (Vestax's VCI-300 & Numark's NS7) are designed to wholly integrate with Serato's new software, called Itch. Itch is more or less the same software you get when you buy Serato Scratch Live, and heralds Serato's first foray into a TOTAL digital solution. Like Torq's Xponent, both controllers will come ready-mapped to the software's controls, both will include the software in the package, and both will include a built-in soundcard. We looked for both of these at Sydney's ENTECH tradeshow last week, but sadly they weren't available to have a play on.

We have no indications of arrival dates or pricing as yet, we expect that they'll start to trickle in over the next few months, so stay tuned for updates. In the meantime, here are a few YouTube videos to whet your appetite:

UDG Bags Signed By Carl Cox

We headed along to Entech at Darling Harbour this week which is a big convention in Sydney showcasing heaps of audio and visual products by distributors from around the country.

UDG, makers of fine quality DJ/Producer bags, had a stand there and who should be the special guest but none other than the big man himself - Carl Cox!

Cox has been right behind the brand since its inception in 2000 and is famous for his quote - "UDG are the best bags I have ever used!"

Ecler EVO 5. The Beast.

 

Okay folks it's time to get super serious.

Serious about sound that is.

And if there is one company that is the epitome of superior sound (and mind-blowing build and design) it is the Spanish brand Ecler.

There is some hot sexy sound lovin' going on here.

Okay so we've got that established I hope...

Next up let's address a little thing called forward-thinking mentality. You know the thing that separates the boys from the men...etc. It seems this team of Spaniards knew a thing or two about this as well. A few years ago Ecler released the Nuo 4 - at the time it was one of the first DJ mixer/MIDI controllers on the market - the first maybe?!?

Well my friends the bar has been well and truly raised since then.

Welcome to the magical world of the EVO5. Much like the Korg Zero range, each channel (5) also doubles as a MIDI line. The effects are the most advanced on a DJ mixer - you can edit the settings and they are displayed on a sizeable LED screen. It has a built-in 12-channel FireWire soundcard with (of course) 24bit/96kHz digital sound.

And yes, it has those lovely, massive, rubber, rotary EQ knobs.

For sure it's one of the more pricey mixers on the market, but you know money ain't everything. (Especially when it's worth it!)

Bang Gang's Gus Da Hoodrat interview

Somehow missed posting this up when it came out, but for anyone who's interested, Remix did a little interview with Gus (of the infamous Bang Gang crew) a couple of months ago. There's a bit of an insight into the genesis of Bang Gang, some of the tunes he was really into then, and he also has a few nice words to say about us.
