Remix 101

So hopefully by this stage you’re becoming aware that we’re running the mother of all remix competitions. $6k prize, I mean SERIOUSLY guys. Win this thing. I’m not allowed to enter (sigh), so it’s all up to you young Skywalker.

But Matt, I’ve never done a Remix before! What do I need to Remix you cry? Creativity.  End of the day that’s it really. It’s important to remember that the idea of a “Remix” began with the re-dubbing of analog tape masters. That’s some tedious time consuming genius right there. Your average iPhone has more advanced audio editing functions than a guy, two reels of tape and a pair of scissors. Pawn shops will probably pay you to take a cassette recording four- track off their shelves. There really is NO EXCUSE for not giving it a go. Use anything that is on hand. Pots and Pans. Whatever.

But Matt, I want to use my computer! Of course you do. It’s so easy. And all those clean parallel OS lines are so soothing. With the exception of browsing for TV plot synopsis on Wikipedia, editing Audio and making music is one of the most enjoyable, creative and understandable functionalities of a modern PC.  So what are you going to need and where can you get it?

There are two basic types of Audio editing software commonly used when remixing. The first is a WAV editor and the second is a DAW.

The WAV editor is your sampling tool. This is your go-to program for extracting your favorite bars or phrases out of desired material to begin that masterful Disco Re-Edit.  WAV editors cut down longer audio into your favorite loops, samples, blips, glitches, drones or other preferred noises. When you’re cutting a loop, you want zoom in nice and close on the waveform so you can get as close to the start of a sound as possible, use logical loop lengths (your typical 4/4 song use 1,2,4,8,16 or 32 bar loops or ¼,1/8,1/16 or 1/32 time divisions in bars) and be aware of long transient sounds (long cymbal splashes, backing vocals, long reverb or delay tails) as they will make your loops sound choppy if you cut them out to suddenly.

The nice thing about WAV editors is that the best ones are largely free. A great understandable WAV editor to start with is Audacity.

DAW programs are your arranger, effecter and mixer program. Some of the most popular DAWS include ProTools, Cubase, Ableton Live, Logic Studio and Fruity Loops Studio. Generally speaking a DAW’s job is to pull all of your external devices, effects, samples and midi units together into one interface so you can combine them quickly and efficiently. If you want to record your own live instruments or synthesizers into your remix you can do this directly into most DAWs using a sound card I/O interface. You will also be able to apply a plethora of effects, from the essentials like compression, reverb and delay to the enjoyable like phaser , flanger, chorus, distortion and filter. Most DAWS come with a built-in selection of MIDI and audio devices but you can also apply you 3rd party software using VST plug-in or Rewire devices. Most DAW’s offer some kind of light version or demo trial from their websites so you can get familiar with the interface and components. For Mac OS users, your platform actually comes with a (albeit simple) DAW in garage band, so don’t be ashamed to get used to general recording & arrangement techniques on a simple program like this first. This is a great opportunity just to drag the master tracks that Damn Arms have given you into all of these programs and see what new sounds you can make up by simply applying effects and re-arranging parts. Get a taste for it, I promise it’ll be your new favorite hobby!

For the more advanced remixer’s who are looking for new sounds to add to their mix, there is truly no end to specialty programs out there that might have just that synth sound or FX parameter you’re looking for. If you’re after drums, the new Native Instruments Maschine and Battery offer a great range of sampled drum sounds and controls. There are different soft-synths a-plenty - Arturia do an excellent line in modeling classic synths like the Mini-Moog and Moog Modular, while Kore, Komplete, Massive and Reaktor from NI set the standard in modern synth sounds. If you want something that does it all and you’re not afraid of the classic rack arrangement Propellerhead’s Reason is a force to be reckoned with.

Once you’ve finished mixing and mastering your sound, you will need to submit your entry to us as an MP3. Be aware when you make these compressions that the smaller you make your file, the more tinny and hollow your sound will be. Try and find that balance between keeping the size small and manageable and retaining the integrity of your sound. 320kbs is the standard high quality format for mp3’s. The LAME codec tends to be the highest quality conversion out there in free-ware land.

Remember guys, no-one knows how you made your track, all that matters is how good it sounds in the end. Get inventive and do whatever works for you. Just as long as it ends up as an mp3 and in our submissions you’re up for consideration!

Pioneer EFX 500 available from Spank!

The Pioneer EFX 500. What an awesome little piece of machinery. Everything about this unit makes me happy. It's built really solidly, the metal chassis and all the component parts feel really sturdy and reliable. The FX processing is top quality, nothing sounds weak or hollow. The jog wheel proves to be a surprisingly accurate and natural way to dial in your FX parameters. The isolator kills are the real deal, completely cutting the desired EQs (all three on results in dead silence). HEAPS of time options for your tape/beat based effects make it incredibly easy to dial in on just the right amount of delay or reverb in seconds. The chain and wet/dry amounts for each section are easy to understand and it takes about 0.0001 of a nanoblip to work out how to use the whole machine.

You effects are separated into two categories either tape/beat reverb and delay type effects controlled on the left hand side or distortion, phase or chorus effectors on the jog wheel on the right. My personal favourite effect is the Ring effect, the Jog wheel is perfect for riding the top harmonic, giving your tracks that extra little bit of presence and interest. As a guitar player, this unit reminds me of a really solid BOSS or Line 6 multi-effects pedal which is a ringing endorsement.

Brand new MicroKORG XL in stock

The microKORG is probably already one of those must have synthesizers. Used on virtually every indie rock or electro record since its release, it's easy to use format and powerful distinctive sounds will be one of those identifiable features of a "00's" record. Mark my words.

So what do you do when you've got a hit keyboard? Make it better! And the MicroKORG XL is a hell of a re-vamp. So what do you get? For starters a brand new synthesis engine based on the based on the Radias/R3 MMT (multi modelling technology) optimized for the microKORG XL. Oscillator 1 (OSC1) provides not only the standard waveforms you expect from an analog synthesizer, but a total of seven types of oscillator algorithms, including formant waveforms such as human voice, noise, and PCM/DWGS waveforms such as vintage keyboards and strings. Cross-modulation, unison, and VPM (Variable Phase Modulation) let you create sounds that would be impossible for a conventional PCM synthesizer. Oscillator 2 (OSC2) can be used for modulation (sync or ring) in conjunction with the first oscillator, making it easy to create complex and powerful sounds.

To add even more variety to your sound, the MicroKORG XL's FX section includes 17 versatile FX options derived from the uber-popular KAOSS series.

The much loved Vocoder feature returns with the XL, with a more powerful 16-band Vocoding engine giving you the warm full vocal effects you've come to enjoy from the R3. Goose-neck Microphone included so you can start vocoding right away.

There are 128 preset patches in the MircoKORG XL, organized into style and type (i.e. Hip Hop/Bass).  A software based editor program is also included that allows a wide range of sound design possibilities using only your MicroKORG XL, a USB and your computer. You can also import your favourite MicroKORG patches into the XL using the software editor.

Stanton SCS.3d Da Scratch at Spank! now

As any devout Serato or Traktor acolyte will be happy to inform you, a midi controller is becoming increasingly essential gear for a new generation of digital DJ. In general there are two schools of thought regarding the design process. The first attempts to replace your mixer & CDJ/Vinyl completely in favour of jog wheels. The second aims to augment the control offered by a conventional mixer & time-code set-up.

The Stanton SCS.3d is unique in its attempt to do a little bit of both. At its maximal functionality you can use one Stanton SCS.3d to control, mix, loop and cue two decks internal to your digital software. Jumping back a step you can quickly and easily manage all your CUEs, LOOPs and FX on the SCS.3d while still performing all you conventional mixers using a time-code format. Multiple SCS.3d's play nicely together, one can function as you internal mixer EQ controls while you can use two to control two decks simultaneously or swap between all four. The more you have, the more powerful your midi machine. They remind me a little bit of Voltron in that regard.

There are four types of control offered by the SCS.3d Surface.
 
Slider Mode: Three contact slider LED strips that run vertically along the middle of the surface. These controls are used for EQ control or FX parameter control.

Circle mode: allows you to run your fingers around the perimeter of the surface to control track information in the same way as you would use a jog wheel.

Button control: splits the contact surface into six regions which can be used for setting loop punches and lengths or to navigate through cue points. There are four extra button arranged around the (I want to say corners, but circles don’t have corners!??) control surface that can be used in all modes for extra button functions. 

Contact Mode: The control surface is sensitive to two points of contact at all time, allowing impossibly fast cuts and changes as it swaps from one point to the other when you release a point of contact (think of a Laptop mouse pad).

Deckadance Digital DJ Software

We finally got round to having a good look at the Deckadance Digital DJ software and now we feel the need to share our discovery.

Maybe because we focus so much attention on Traktor Scratch and Serato Live we let this well-priced software slip under our radar. Deckadance is a mighty software application that allows you to mix your digital files in a very professional manner. The interface itself has all the DJ functions you need - 3-Band EQ, level faders, crossfader, visual waveform indicator and transport buttons. And then some...8 sampling channels to record and capture loops or one-shot samples, 8 VST hosting channels in which you can use most third-party VSTs and VSTis and it also has an XY pad to control effects (yes it comes with a ton of effects, all easy to use and apply).

One the greatest "why didn't we notice you sooner" functions of Deckadance is that you can use a whole host of existing Timecode Vinyl brands - such as M-Audio's Torq or Serato's Timecode vinyl and it comes with preset MIDI-mappings for the Vestax VCI-100, VCI-300 and VCM-100, Stanton DaSratch, Korg Zero 4 and heaps of other popular MIDI controllers.

And while the popular competitors retail for around $800 - $1200, Deckadance is a mere $279.00 for the club edition - this version features everything listed above! The House Edition doesn't have the 8-Channel Sampler or such varied control options. If you weren't after these functions though, it's only $169. Both Editions are available from yours truly

Traktor Duo arrives April 1

It's hard to admit but not everyone is as gear infatuated as I am. Some people just like things to be simple, easy, functional and CHEAP! You simply don't like paying for a million extra features you'll almost definitely never use, just in case one day you might. I mean where is the FUN if you're not wading through cables-up-to-eyeballs, perform at least one cross platform MIDI slave and at least once during an evening have NO IDEA which channel "that sound" is actually coming in on....

Ok, so maybe you do have a point.

Arriving on our sea girt shores this April, Native Instruments have announced a stripped down version of their enormously popular Traktor Scratch Pro. The Traktor DUO pack includes the Traktor DUO software component for TWO (not four) deck control, with SIX of the most popular effects from the PRO version. All other functionality that you know and love has been left in tact. Also included is the Native Instruments Audio 4 soundcard and two multi-core cables which allows for time-code control vinyl/CD usage over two decks.

With a RRP of $849 this pack is a seriously sound economic decision.
